Two years on Oracle, two years of carry-outs to the parking lot, two years of nail trims and self-washes and four-bay grooming, and a steady reminder that “neighborhood pet store” is not a slogan when the staff actually knows your dog’s name.
When Pet Supplies Plus opened on N. La Cañada Drive in late August 2024 — the first PSP in Tucson and the third Arizona store launched by owner-operator Mich Bayley — we featured the new arrival and predicted it would change the experience of buying pet supplies in Oro Valley. Two years in, the prediction has held up. The store is no longer the new face on Oracle. It is part of the routine. It is where neighbors stop on the way home from Fry’s. It is where the groomers know which dogs hate the dryer. It is where the Sunday self-wash regulars say hi to each other on their way in.
For our May 2026 update, we revisited what makes the store work, what has settled in over two years, and what is worth knowing if you have not been in lately.
The grooming salon has a following. The full-service grooming salon and the four-bay self-wash that opened with the store have become the heart of the operation. Professional groomers vetted with a portfolio review and a technical-skills assessment handle the appointments; dog owners who prefer to do it themselves use the self-wash bays for a fraction of the time and mess of doing it at home.
Senior discount day. The second and fourth Sunday of every month is senior discount day — 10% off the total purchase. Bring the pet. The staff likes that part.
Self-wash Sundays. The first and third Sunday of the month feature the self-wash stations. If you have been bending over your bathtub trying to wash a 60-pound dog, this is the alternative.
Curbside and same-day delivery. One-hour curbside pickup and free same-day delivery on online orders are part of the offering. The “Leave the Hassle Behind” tagline still applies.
They carry the bag to the car. Big bags of food run 28–40 lbs. with a 50 lb. ceiling. Staff are trained to walk it out for you. This is the small thing that everyone notices.
A few products in particular fit the desert and are worth asking about as the temperature climbs through May into June: paw-protecting booties for hot pavement (the asphalt on Oracle in July is a real problem for unprotected paws), pool-ready life preservers for dogs who swim, hydration accessories for trails, and cooling mats for the dogs who cannot be talked into staying inside. The store stocks for our climate, not for some generic national average.
Owner-operator Mich Bayley is an Arizona native and the franchisee who launched the first two Arizona PSP locations in North Scottsdale and Moon Valley before bringing the third to Oro Valley. The “neighbor-centric” culture he talked about at the 2024 grand opening — staff who learn names, a store that hosts community gatherings, a business that treats animal rescue as a real responsibility — is what readers told us made them keep coming back.
“At Pet Supplies Plus, we want to help all the animals in the community be safe, comfortable, and find their forever home.” — Mich Bayley
The store continues to dedicate resources to animal welfare in ways that do not directly support the bottom line. Staff post available rescue animals on social media. Adoption events at the Phoenix-area locations have placed dozens of animals in single afternoons; the OV store participates in similar efforts in coordination with regional partners.
On the live-animal side, the store does not sell dogs or cats — a deliberate choice that aligns with the criticism animal-rights groups have leveled at high-volume retail breeding for those species. The PSP approach for dogs and cats is rescue and adoption, not retail.
What you will find: freshwater and saltwater fish, reptiles such as bearded dragons (a perennial favorite, especially with kids), leopard geckos (the other favorite), corn snakes, and ball pythons. The Oro Valley store was the first PSP in Arizona to offer birds, guinea pigs, and hamsters as well. The floor includes a dedicated live-animal care person — knowledgeable, available, and the one who writes the species-specific care placards.
