The Sonoran Desert keeps its own calendar. For most of the year, it holds its breath — dry washes baked to pale dust, rocky slopes shimmering in silence. Then the monsoon arrives, and everything changes in an instant.
When the Desert Drinks captures that electric moment of transformation. A flash flood tears through a rocky desert arroyo, the water running heavy with the red earth it carries from the mountains above. Palo verde and desert scrub line the banks, lush with the sudden green that only monsoon season can produce. Above it all, a rugged mesa formation rises against a turbulent storm sky — dark clouds broken by a shaft of warm golden light that falls across the peaks like a benediction.
This is the Sonoran Desert in its most dramatic and most generous hour. Painted in rich impasto oil technique, every element carries visible brushwork — the churning water, the storm-lit sky, the ancient rock faces that have watched a thousand such floods come and go.
