The Rillito River Band takes its name from the Tucson location where these veteran musicians first came together. These long-time Tucsonans draw from diverse musical traditions including mariachi, folk, folk rock, and vintage rock. Their performances feature songs from The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Thin Lizzy, Van Morrison, The Eagles, The Beach Boys, The Kinks, The Knack, and Tommy James, along with original compositions.
The lineup includes Oscar Chavez (lead vocals, guitar, bass), who began in Tex-Mex bands and has performed for President George W. Bush. Russell Long (songwriter, harmony vocals, guitar, bass) has played rock, folk, and bluegrass since age 14, including with Rocky & His Friends. John McCaleb (lead guitar, rhythm guitar, vocals) is recognized as one of Tucson’s premier improvisational guitarists, adding country influences to the repertoire. “Cowboy” Mike Joyal, formerly of The Last Call Girls, handles drums and percussion. Oscar and Russell are both Tucson Musicians’ Museum Hall of Fame inductees. The band delivers intricate three and four-part harmonies, heartfelt ballads, energetic rock, and audience interaction. Ages 16 and up.
