The Rillito River Band is a vintage rock ‘n’ roll group rooted in Tucson’s musical heritage. Formed by musicians who first came together in a building along the banks of the Rillito River, the band takes its name from that very spot. With deep ties to the Old Pueblo, their sound is shaped by mariachi, folk, folk rock, and especially the golden era of vintage rock.
Their influences span generations and genres—The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Thin Lizzy, Van Morrison, The Eagles, The Beach Boys, The Kinks, The Knack, and Tommy James—all of whose music features prominently in their set lists, along with a handful of original songs.
Band members include:
Oscar Chavez (lead vocals, guitar, bass) – Raised in Tex-Mex bands and once a performer for President George W. Bush.
Russell Long (songwriter, harmony vocals, finger-style guitar, bass) – A veteran of folk, bluegrass, and rock bands since his teens, including Rocky & His Friends.
John McCaleb (lead and rhythm guitar, vocals) – One of Tucson’s premier improvisational guitarists, adding a touch of country flair to the mix.
“Cowboy” Mike Joyal (drums, percussion) – Formerly of The Last Call Girls, and a master of rhythm and energy on stage.
Oscar and Russell are proud inductees of the Tucson Musicians Museum’s “Hall of Fame.” Together, the band delivers rich three- and four-part harmonies, heartfelt ballads, high-energy rock ‘n’ roll, and an engaging stage presence full of fun and personality.
