The Rillito River Band is Tucson’s own vintage rock ’n’ roll group, born from a friendship forged in a building along the banks of the Rillito River—hence their name. These lifelong Tucsonans bring deep musical roots grounded in the rich traditions of The Old Pueblo, from mariachi and folk to folk rock and classic rock.
Their sound is shaped by legends like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Thin Lizzy, Van Morrison, The Eagles, The Beach Boys, The Kinks, The Knack, and Tommy James. You’ll hear these favorites and a few originals at every lively performance.
Meet the band:
Oscar Chavez (lead vocals, guitar, bass): Raised on Tex-Mex music, Oscar has even performed for President George W. Bush.
Russell Long (songwriter, harmony vocals, fingerstyle guitar, bass): A musical storyteller since age 14, he’s played in rock, folk, and bluegrass bands including Rocky & His Friends.
John McCaleb (lead & rhythm guitar, vocals): A renowned Tucson guitarist known for his improvisation, fingerstyle flair, and subtle country influence.
“Cowboy” Mike Joyal (drums, percussion): A master drummer and former member of The Last Call Girls.
Oscar and Russell are proud inductees of the Tucson Musicians Museum “Hall of Fame.” Together, the band delivers tight three- and four-part harmonies, touching ballads, raucous rock, and a playful stage presence that keeps audiences engaged and smiling.
Ages 16+ welcome.
