After a long and winding road, Arizona officially became the 48th state of the Union on February 14, 1912. Its journey was unique, holding the title for the longest path to statehood alongside New Mexico (excluding current territories). Despite facing challenges like mining interests and concerns over water rights, Arizonans finally achieved their dream on what some consider a fittingly romantic date, Valentine’s Day. President William Howard Taft signed the statehood bill, marking a significant moment for the territory and the nation, expanding the Union further westward and adding a diverse landscape brimming with potential. This historic event continues to be celebrated in Arizona, reminding residents of their rich history and unique journey to becoming an integral part of the United States.
