SUMMARY:Tohono Chul Celebrates Chiles\, Chocolate and Day of the Dead
DESCRIPTION:Tohono Chul’s annual Chiles\, Chocolate and Day of the Dead Festival returns Saturday\, Oct. 31\, with a full day celebrating the flavors\, art and traditions of the Southwest. \nFrom 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, families can explore Día de los Muertos traditions throughout the gardens. Expect live mariachi music\, folklórico dance performances\, and tastings from Tucson chocolatiers and chile and salsa vendors. Cooking demonstrations run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Overlook. \nEducator talks include a Chiltepin Talk and Ben’s Bells in the Children’s Garden. Photo spots are set up around the property\, including the horse sculpture\, Drew’s saguaro sculpture\, and the Arboretum Cantina. \nLocal and regional artists will sell handcrafted textiles\, artwork\, and one-of-a-kind gifts\, and the Tohono Chul nursery will sell chiltepins and marigolds. \nKids get their own lineup from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Children’s Garden. Free crafts include chile pepper piñatas\, calavera masks\, and flower crowns. Desert Divas will offer Día de los Muertos face painting\, and Sami’s is hosting a paint party. \nDon’t miss the Día de los Muertos altars exhibition on the Exhibit House Patio. Local artists and students created the colorful artwork\, handmade altars\, and personal ofrendas on display. The exhibit also features a community altar where guests can leave recuerdos (remembrances) for loved ones who have passed. Those recuerdos will be carried to Tucson’s All Souls Procession on Sunday\, Nov. 8\, and burned in the Burning of the Urn Ceremony. DESCRIPTION:Tohono Chul and the Tucson City of Gastronomy are bringing back Terruño: Flavors of the Desert on Sunday\, Nov. 8\, from 4 to 7 p.m. The annual tasting event celebrates the food\, wine\, and culinary traditions that define the Sonoran Desert\, and it’s shaping up to be one of the season’s best excuses to spend an evening in the gardens. \nTerruño brings together local chefs and Arizona winemakers for a one-of-a-kind tasting experience. Guests will sample innovative dishes built around autumnal\, artisanal flavors\, paired with regional wines\, and they’ll get the rare chance to meet the chefs and winemakers behind them face to face. Live music from local performers fills out the evening\, all set against Tohono Chul’s gardens as the sun goes down. \nWho’s Cooking and Pouring\nThe chef lineup draws from some of the region’s best-known kitchens: David Marks of Tohono Chul Garden Bistro\, Ryan Clark of Loews Ventana Canyon\, Devon Sanner and Travis Peters of S + P Creative\, Ramon Delgado of Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resort & Spa\, and John Martinez of Tito & Pep. \nOn the wine side\, guests will find pours from Callaghan Vineyards\, Deep Sky Vineyard\, and Twisted Union Wine Company\, all out of Elgin\, along with Laramita Cellars and Pillsbury Wine Company from Willcox\, and Sonoran Wines from Pearce. It’s a solid cross-section of what Arizona’s wine country has been producing\, all in one place. \nTickets and Details\nTerruño is a 21-and-older event. Early bird tickets run $125 per person through Monday\, Sept. 14.
